A client from Winchester, NV, contacted Kingpin Car and Marine Audio about adding a subwoofer system to his 2016 Ford F-250. He didn’t want anything crazy, but, as with almost every factory audio system, there was simply no bass in his vehicle. We scheduled a consultation with the client to confirm what he was after, then drew up a plan to add a subwoofer under the rear seat of the truck. With his approval, we got to work.
We created a wooden frame for the subwoofer enclosure that would house a single Hertz Dieci-series DS25.3 10-inch sub. To maximize the airspace in the vehicle, we used fiberglass for the bottom of the enclosure. Fiberglass is extremely rigid, but doesn’t consume precious airspace. More airspace means the sub will play lower.
We topped the enclosure with MDF and gave it a gradual radius on the router table. We used black carpet to finish the enclosure. We wrapped up the installation by ensuring the sub was acoustically in phase with the rest of the system and we set the level so it was fun to listen to.
