A client from Oregon City contacted Kingpin Car & Marine Audio, looking to upgrade his 2011 VW GTI audio system. Our team scheduled a time for him to stop by our facility so we could look over the vehicle with him, go over goals for the upgrades and listen to equipment that would work best for him. At the end of our consultation, we worked up a proposal for the suggested audio upgrade that he liked, so we set a time for him to drop off his vehicle.
VW GTI Audio System Starts With BitOne Processor
As is the case with many of the audio builds at Kingpin, we left the factory VW in-dash touchscreen intact, since it looked great and gave the client all the features and options he wanted. We added an Audison BitOne processor to the outputs of the factory system for several reasons:
- The VW equalization could be removed from the music.
- The music could be summed back to a full-range signal.
- Dedicated digital delay, crossovers and 31 bands of equalization were now at our disposal for all the speakers in the GTi.
Once the BitOne was installed, we turned our attention to amplifiers. We used a total of four Hertz Digital Power amplifiers: two HDP1s and two HDP4s. Every speaker in the car got its own dedicated amplifier channel, giving us more control over the system, better overall sound and lots more output. This build used more than 3,000 watts of clean power, so to say the client could experience concert-level volume for extended periods of time would be an understatement.
Improved Front Stage Thanks To Mille Pro Speakers
When it came time to choose speakers for the vehicle, we went with the Hertz Mille Pro series models, using MP25 tweeters and the MP165 woofers for both front stage and rear fill. We installed the front woofers in the factory locations in the doors on custom composite mounts that we machined in-house. We flushed the tweeters into custom A pillars that allowed for precision-aiming them for the best in sound imaging.
Rear Fill Continues With Mille Pro Speakers
In the rear of the vehicle, we installed the MP165 woofers and MP25 tweeters in the factory VW locations, again using custom speaker adapter plates that we machine in our own facility.
Mille Pro Subwoofers For Powerful Low End Output
The final pieces of equipment were the subwoofers, and we used the Hertz Mille Pro MP250’s, which are 10” in diameter. We built a custom sealed enclosure for the subwoofers to place them down in the spare tire well.
Amps and Subwoofers Mounted In Spare Tire Well
Speaking of the tire well, the crew at Kingpin Car & Marine Audio built a beautiful amp rack to hold the four amplifiers and the processor. As you can see in the pictures, the whole assembly fits neatly down into the spare tire well in the hatch floor. We made our legendary Kingpin trim panels and grilles in a color combination of black and red to match the color scheme that Volkswagen has made famous with their GTi models for the last 30 years. We placed red LED accent lighting strategically around the amplifiers to give them a classy, illuminated look.
The final piece of the trunk install was a cover panel that completely hid all the equipment and yet only raised the trunk floor ¾” higher than the original stock floor, preserving the client’s cargo space.
Final Tuning By Our Certified Tuners
Once the installation of equipment was finished, our certified Bit installers got out their laptops and began the task of fine-tuning the sound system. From our experience, this is where many shops sacrifice quality for speed. They get it sounding “good enough” and stop there. Here at Kingpin, we tune the system until we have extracted every last ounce of sound quality and output from it. When you are making a sizable investment in an audio system, don’t you want all the performance available? We sure think so.
Stunning Installation To Be Featured At CES
When we called the client and told him his vehicle was ready to be picked up, we also had more good news for him: Hertz and Audison were so impressed with the installation that they wanted the vehicle to be in their booth at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show! That is the most prestigious electronics show in the world, and the client jumped at the opportunity.
