A client from Tualatin contacted Kingpin Car & Marine Audio about doing an upgrade to his 1978 Jeep CJ-5 audio system, electronics and interior. We set up a time for him to stop by the shop with his Jeep and have an audio consultation. When he arrived, we went out to the Jeep and looked it over together. The first thing we noticed is that this CJ is awesome! Our team listened as he explained his goals for the upgrades and offered our input and suggestions. Once we were done looking over the vehicle, we came inside so we could listen to equipment together. At the end of our consult, we worked up a proposal that we felt best suited his needs. He liked our idea, so we set a time for him to drop off the vehicle with us.
Fresh Leather Seats
In this vehicle, our goal was to give the client modern electronics, great sound and a kick-butt–looking interior. We started by having the front and rear seats upholstered, as well as installing new carpeting throughout the Jeep.
Custom Console – iPad mini Integration
The next step involved our making a custom center console for the Jeep that looked modern, yet blended in well with the interior. The front of the console holds a Sony MEXGS-810BH CD player in a recessed panel. The Sony unit gives the client Bluetooth, USB for external media and a great pre-amp. The console was designed to hold an iPad mini in front of the Sony unit, making it look factory-equipped. The iPad runs a Sony app that lets it control many of the functions of the Sony CD player directly from the iPad.
The console also has two billet aluminum cup holders, as well as USB ports flushed into it that will charge his portable devices.
Fabricated Rear Speaker Enclosures
When it came time to choose speakers, we went with a pair of Hertz ECX100.5 4” coaxial speakers in the dash. In the rear of the vehicle, things got a lot more interesting. Since we wanted to keep the vehicle looking sleek and modern, we didn’t want a pair of pods or a sound bar that would detract from the classiness of the vehicle, so we built a custom enclosure that sits on top of each wheel well. It houses a pair of Hertz DCX165.3 6.5” coaxials on each side, for a total of two pairs of speakers. We fabricated a custom grille to cover the speakers, resulting in a completely stealth-looking enclosure.
Any good stereo system needs bass, but where are you going to put subwoofers in a CJ-5? Our design team came up with an idea to make custom enclosures that fit under each front seat to hold a Hertz DS250 10” subwoofer in a sealed enclosure. Now the client has incredible bass with no loss of interior space.
Powered By Punch
Now it was time for speakers. As we had very limited space, we chose a pair of Rockford Fosgate amplifiers – the PBR500x1 – to power the subwoofers and a PBR300x4 to power the front and rear speakers. This combination gives the client 800 watts of clean power, so he can play his music at concert levels any time he likes. Since these amplifiers are extremely small, we were able to hide them inside the center console, again keeping all the interior space for the client.
Keeping It Secure
To keep the Jeep secure, our technicians installed a Viper 300 alarm system, so the client will know if anyone is messing with his baby.
In usual Kingpin fashion, when the installation was finished, we spent significant time on tuning the audio system so we could extract every last ounce of sound quality out of it.
Jeep CJ-5 Audio and Interior Makeover Like New
After our team did a thorough check out of the vehicle, we contacted the client and let him know it was ready to go. When he came in, he was thrilled at the new look of his vehicle. He marveled at the quality of the craftsmanship and the attention to detail. When we cranked it up for him for the first time, he was a happy camper.
