A client from Spring Valley, Nevada contacted Kingpin Car and Marine Audio about adding a radar detector to his 2016 Tesla Model S. We scheduled a consultation with the client to discuss his needs for the system and review the different products we have to offer. Once we agreed to a system, we had a look at his car and finalized where we would mount the laser diffusers and the interior components. With everything mapped out, we scheduled an appointment to perform the installation.
Tesla Radar and Laser
The client agreed to the K40 RL360i integrated radar protection system. The RL360i includes dedicated high-sensitivity, front and rear radar detectors. It also includes a main control module and warning indicators. To ensure maximum performance and sensitivity from the radar detection receivers, we mounted them on the bumper supports. This mounting location requires the removal of both the front and rear bumper covers. As with any large panels we remove, we protect the vehicle with automotive-grade green tape to ensure nothing will be scratched or damaged.
The removal of the bumpers allows us to run the wiring very neatly into the passenger compartment. We always secure any wiring we add to factory wiring harnesses and protect the wiring with automobile-specific Tesa cloth tape.
To increase his protection, the client chose to add K40’s Laser Defuser system. We selected three Defuser G5 transceivers for the Tesla. We mounted a single unit above and slightly to the left of the rear license plate. We mounted the front diffusers in the lower front grill on either side of the license plate. We take great care in how we mount the diffusers. The units must be within two degrees of horizontal and pointed straight ahead. This offers maximum range, and therefore, maximum protection.
The client wanted to keep the interior of the vehicle clutter free. We mounted the pair of included blue LEDs on the top of the instrument cluster trim panel. When there is a laser or radar warning, the LEDs flash and the small speaker we concealed in the dash provides clear warnings to slow down.
With the vehicle reassembled and the system functionality confirmed, the client returned to Kingpin Car and Marine Audio in Wilsonville, Oregon, to pick up his car. Once he was here, we reviewed how the system worked and what the different LEDs indicated. He was impressed with how well we integrated the system into his vehicle. He could not tell we had removed and reinstalled the bumper covers at all. When it is time to protect yourself for Laser and Radar, contact Kingpin HERE. We would be happy to schedule a consultation with you.
