A new client from Beaverton, Oregon, came to Kingpin Car & Marine Audio looking for a 2012 Honda Accord audio upgrade. One of our team sat down with him and listened as he explained his goals for the system. We went out to the vehicle and looked it over together, and then offered our suggestions for the vehicle. Once we gathered all of our information, we offered a solution to the client, and he liked it, so we set up an installation date.
JBL MS-8 Allows Retention Of Factory Radio
We knew from the beginning that the stock Honda stereo system in the dash was going to stay, so we added a JBL MS-8 processor to the speaker outputs of the factory stereo system. The MS-8 takes the musical signal and strips it of any of the equalization that Honda adds, plus it sums all of the music back into a full-range signal. By doing this, we now had a good starting point from which to build the audio upgrade.
Scanspeak Front Sound Stage
In the front of the vehicle, we installed Scanspeak 6.5” woofers in the stock locations in the front doors, using our signature composite speaker plates to ensure a solid mounting surface for the high-performance drivers. We mounted Scanspeak tweeters in the A-pillars that we reshaped and recovered, so they looked like factory pieces when completed.
Center Channel Speakers For Rock-Solid Center Image
The MS8 is set up to handle a center channel, so our team made a custom grille and mount on top of the dash to hold a 3.5” midrange, along with a pair of tweeters. In the lower part of the dash, we made another custom grille and mount to hold a 5.25” woofer that worked in tandem with the dash speakers, giving the client a three-way center channel package.
Stock Rear Speakers Perform Ambient Fill Duties
In the rear of the vehicle, we kept the stock speakers, since they were only going to be used as effect speakers for the MS-8 processor, so there was no need to upgrade them for the client.
Upgraded Side Panels For Two 12″ Subwoofers
A lot of the magic in the installation happened in the trunk. We made custom fiberglass enclosures on both sides of the trunk to house the 12” subwoofers. After they were covered and had the custom grilles installed, they looked like factory Honda pieces, which was the premise for the whole build.
Amplifiers And Processors Flush-Mounted In Floor
We engineered a metal amp rack to fit perfectly in the floor of the trunk, designed to hinge up, giving the client access to his spare tire. When the amp rack is closed, the trunk can be used just like any normal trunk, giving the client his goal of maximum space and usability.
When it came time for power, we chose two Audison Voce amplifiers. We used an AV5.1k to power the subwoofers and the front left and right speakers. It sends 1,000 watts of clean power to the two subwoofers while giving 140 watts per channel to the front door woofers. The A-pillar tweeters receive the final 70 watts per channel off this amplifier. We used a second amplifier, the AV Quattro, to power the center channel and rear fill speakers. It sends 120 watts to the 5.25” woofer, along with another 120 watts to the 3.5” and tweeter set on top of the dash. We sent the remaining 120 watts per channel to the rear speakers.
The MS-8 allowed us to use dedicated amplifier channels for each of the speakers and gave us digital delay, crossover adjustment and equalization for every speaker. Since we wanted to keep the center channel speakers running active, we added an AudioControl 6XS crossover to the center channel outputs of the MS-8, giving us the dedicated amp channels we desired for the center channel speakers.
