A client from Henderson, NV contacted Kingpin Car & Marine Audio about adding a custom-installed laser and radar detector to his 2013 Porsche 911. Our team scheduled a consultation so the guy could stop by the store with his vehicle and have a one-on-one meeting with our staff. While he was here, we looked over the vehicle, exploring installation options and understanding how the vehicle was used on a daily basis. At the end of our meeting, we worked up a proposal that he liked, so we set a time to begin working on the 911.
K40 Radar Detector System Offers the Ultimate in Protection
During our time with the client, we figured out on that he wanted the ultimate in protection, so we suggested the K40 RL360i system. It includes a front and rear radar receiver, giving the driver more information about where the radar is in relation to the vehicle. We can also choose the number of laser defusers to use, from as little as one to as many as five. In this 911, we used two Optix defusers upfront and a single one in the rear.
Secure Mounting of Sensors Is a Must

Many shops that choose to install custom laser and radar detector systems will cut corners in many areas of the installation to work faster so they can offer a lower total price. Unfortunately, the end-user gets the short end of the stick.
Double-sided tape, Velcro and drywall screws are not proper mounting methods for sensors. If an installer uses these, the performance of the sensors will suffer greatly, and reliability will be suspect. In a Kingpin installation, we mount every sensor securely to the subframe of the vehicle, ensuring a solid, reliable position. When you are driving up the road, the front bumper will vibrate. If the sensors are mounted to the plastic, they vibrate just like the bumper and performance diminishes significantly.
It is our position that a custom-installed system is an investment in the vehicle, and you should get all the performance possible. Upfront, we hid the radar receiver behind the front bumper, completely out of view. We used the same method for the rear radar receiver.
Laser Defuser Location Is Critical
Every year, more and more police use laser guns for generating speeding tickets. The technology is known as LIDAR and uses a low-power laser beam to track your speed. The advantage of this technology is its ability to pick a vehicle out of a crowd. The beam pattern is less than 2 feet wide at 300 yards. If you own a portable radar detector with a laser sensor, it is useless at protecting you from LIDAR. When a person in front of you is shot with laser, you won’t know it, so you drive right into the laser trap.
With a laser defuser from K40, when your vehicle is shot with LIDAR, the sensors immediately fire back powerful beams of light that the laser gun doesn’t recognize, so it can’t get a reading on you. You now have precious seconds to slow down and avoid a ticket. For the laser defusers to work properly, they have to be mounted parallel to the road and aimed perfectly ahead. They also need an unobstructed view of the laser gun shooting at them, or they become ineffective, so choosing a good-quality installer like Kingpin Car & Marine Audio is essential if you want the system to work properly. We installed two Optix laser defusers in the front of the 911 that met all these requirements as well as a single rear defuser in a custom license plate frame.
Factory-style Connections and Harnesses
Whenever Kingpin does an installation, we mimic the vehicle manufacturer in style and materials. In this case, we used TESA tape to loom all the wiring, with everything designed for easy serviceability in the future by us or a Porsche technician. We soldered all connections with protective heat-shrink covering.
Well-placed Controller and Alert Notifications
Inside the vehicle, we flush-mounted the K40 controller in a convenient spot in the center console, in easy reach of the driver. We flushed two LEDs into the instrument cluster to alert the driver of a threat, with the left LED indicating a front threat and the right LED indicating a rear threat. A hidden speaker also gives the client audible alerts of any threat from behind, as well as programming changes made to the system.
