A client from Beaverton, Oregon, brought his GMC Motorhome to Kingpin Car & Marine Audio to have the entertainment system updated. The motorhome was originally built with an entertainment center that included a tube-style TV. He wanted to update it with something larger and requested that we also make provisions for him to watch TV outdoors. We let the client listen to some products in our showroom, then developed an upgrade plan that would meet his budget and performance goals.
42″ Flat Screens – Apple TV Integration
We created a custom mount for an articulating flatscreen bracket and attached a 42-inch flat panel TV to the bracket in place of the original tube TV. The articulating bracket allows the TV to swing out and into the corner so more people can see it. The client has an Apple TV, and the vehicle has an external cable TV connection for use when at camp sites that include cable. All sources can be watched on the interior TV.
The client spends a lot of time outdoors while camping and asked for a second TV that could be easily watched while outside the motorhome. We created a custom steel bracket for a second 42-inch TV and welded it together to allow the TV to clip onto the factory BBQ mounting bracket on the side of the motorhome. We included a spacer at the bottom of the TV to ensure it hangs parallel to the side of the vehicle. In addition to the source signal cables., we had to run 120 V electrical to the storage locker underneath the TV to power it and any other accessories that the owner may want to connect. All the available signal sources can be watched on this TV as well.
Sub Bass and Coaxial Additions
The client had an amplifier and 10-inch subwoofer connected to the interior TV. We replaced the four old speakers in the ceiling with Hertz ECX165 coaxial speakers. We fine-tuned the amplifier to ensure that the new speakers and existing subwoofer blended perfectly.
Because flatscreen TVs have horrid speakers, we came up with a plan to create a dedicated audio system for the external TV. We fabricated a “sound bar” to fit inside the storage locker under the TV mount. We created the custom enclosure out of polymer plastic, so even if it gets wet, it won’t be damaged. We used a pair of 6.5” coaxial speakers and a Hertz ES200 subwoofer in the enclosure to deliver full, rich sound without being obnoxious. The system is powered by a dedicated four-channel amplifier that we mounted to the rear of the enclosure. We included an Exile Audio Bluetooth audio receiver in the external audio system. With the Bluetooth receiver, the owner can stream music from his smartphone.
GMC Motorhome Entertainment System: Audio Enhanced Camping
As with every installation we perform here at Kingpin Marine & Car Audio, we take pride in ensuring that all the wiring is secured, all the components are mounted rigidly and everything is easy to operate. We went through all the system functions with the client when he came back to pick up the motorhome. He loved the way both systems sounded and was excited about his next camping trip.
