A client from Las Vegas, Neveda contacted Kingpin Car & Marine Audio about installing a premium radar detection system on his 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG. The GL63 AMG is an amazing SUV. It features a twin-turbo 5.5 Liter V8 that can produce up to 557 horsepower and go from 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds. To say that this vehicle is fast is a gross understatement. With a truck this powerful, it takes only a second or two to exceed the speed limit, even if just by accident. Understandably, the client wanted to be sure he had as much warning as possible when radar or laser detection systems were in use nearby. We scheduled a consultation time with the client to confirm his needs.
Premium Radar Detection by K40 Electronics
We suggested the K40 RL360i radar detector system to protect him from radar-based speed-detection systems. The RL360i uses dedicated front and rear radar receivers for maximum sensitivity in both directions. Some clients ask why we suggest an installed radar detector over a windshield-mount unit. The radar receivers in an installed system are much larger, giving them higher sensitivity. This extra sensitivity translates to earlier warnings.
The RL360i radar detector system includes a GPS receiver, so the client can set locations where speed traps are common. K40 calls this MA or Mark to Alert. You can also mark locations for the system to ignore false alarms at non-police radar locations. These locations are called MMs – or Mark to Mutes.
We added the Expert Control Unit to the system to give the client simple and easy control over all the functions of the system. We installed the control unit in the coin tray in the center console of the vehicle. We cut an ABS plastic panel to fit the tray, then textured it to match the look of the trim around the drink warmer button and cigarette lighter plug. A factory cover conceals the area when not in use.
Laser Defusers and Custom Installation
To guard against speed readings from laser-based detection systems, we installed five K40 Laser Defuser Optix transmitters. The front of the vehicle has a total of three transmitters – two in the outside corners of the lower grille and one up high, centered in the upper grille. Our technicians completely removed the front bumper cover and grille to ensure that the installation and aiming of the sensors were perfect. Removing the bumper cover also allowed us to secure and conceal the wiring. The nose of the GL63 is substantial, so using three sensors provides maximum coverage and protection.
It took a little more work to install the pair of rear Defuser Optix transmitters the way we wanted them. We placed one sensor at either end of the chrome trim piece in the middle of the hatch. We sandwiched the optical transceiver between two pieces of aluminum that we cut to match the contour of the vehicle. We used several acrylic plastic pieces in the center of the mount to space the aluminum apart, then filled the remainder with plastic body filler.
Once the filler had hardened, we sanded each mount smooth and painted them to match the truck. The Optix units slide in nicely and are perfectly trimmed by the new mounting brackets. This mounting location puts the Optix units in an optimum position to provide excellent protection from laser speed detectors behind the vehicle. We tied the Optix sensors into the RL360i, so all the warnings are presented and controlled in the same fashion as the radar warnings – rear sensors to the rear LED, etc.
Client Couldn’t Wait To Try Out The New GL63 Radar System
The client was very pleased with the custom installation of his K40 system. He was anxious to drive the SUV, knowing that he now has as much protection as possible against getting a ticket. There are few things worse than pulling out to pass someone, only to see flashing lights as soon as you merge back into your lane.
