One of the most exotic vehicles in the world is a Ferrari. They are hand built vehicles designed to be rolling pieces of art. For Ferrari, it all comes down to function. If it doesn’t perform like a Ferrari, it doesn’t get the prancing horse logo. What many people don’t know is that Ferrari themselves will occasionally make an even more special vehicle. Recently Kingpin Car and Marine Audio had the pleasure of working on one of them. It was a 2009 F430 Scuderia Spyder 16m. From the moment you lay your eyes on this beauty, you know it is no ordinary Ferrari. Everything about this car was purpose built to make it lighter and to perform better.
The owner of this beauty came to us for a Ferrari audio system worthy of this unique vehicle. In addition to the car audio system, the client also wanted the increased safety that a radar detector and laser diffuser could offer. Follow along as we discuss the build on this vehicle.
Fanatical Vehicle Care
As with most exotic cars, many of the interior trim pieces in this vehicle are hand built for this particular car. Damaging anything in the build would have catastrophic repercussions as these parts are not readily available. Fortunately, we are fanatical about how we care for the vehicle while in our possession. The green tape you see all over the body of the car is an automotive grade 3m tape that we use to protect any areas of the car that we come in contact with. This protection ensures that the customer receives the vehicle back in the same (well, actually, BETTER) condition we received it.
Ferrari Audio System Designed Around The Client And The Car
The audio system started with a head unit upgrade. We chose a Sony GS Series unit as they are known to be bulletproof reliable and incredible sounding. It gave the client SmartPhone integration of all their music plus full Bluetooth functionality. From there, the music traveled downstream to an Audison AP8.9Bit amplifier. This amplifier was configured to power an Audison APK163 speaker system. It consists of a 6.5” woofer, 4” midrange, and 1” tweeter, all of which we mounted in the stock speaker locations in the front of the vehicle.
Digital Sound Processor Heightens The Audio Experience
Each of these six speakers had their own dedicated amplifier channel, which allowed us incredible flexibility in tuning the sound that came out of each speaker. Built into the AP8.9Bit amplifier is what is known as a Bit processor, Audison’s proprietary Digital Sound Processor. The DSP functions allow us to digitally adjust the delay of the sound for every speaker, allowing the music to arrive at our ears at the perfect time. When you sit in the driver’s seat after we have tuned the intricate equalization system, digital delay, speaker output levels, and crossover points, what you hear is pure music nirvana. The sound stages beautifully across the top of the dash as though the band was playing right in front of you. And the clarity in this Ferrari audio upgrade rivals the best sound in the studio.
Bass System Provides Better Than Factory Response With Great Looks
This sounds great, but what about the bass? Music has no soul unless you can feel the kickdrum or bass guitar. We understand that, but this car threw us a big curveball. It was never designed to house a subwoofer of any type, and Ferrari surely didn’t give us much space to work. We love a challenge here at Kingpin, so we designed a very elaborate enclosure to fit behind the seats in this vehicle and allow full travel of the seat. Two 10” subwoofers were able to be squeezed into that the space we had to work with. If you look very carefully, you will see a unique design pressed into the speaker grills that were made for the subwoofers. The design is a mirror image of the back of the seat, so it can butt right up against the woofers without damaging anything. This is just one of the many details that were built into the design of this audio upgrade.
To power the subwoofers in this Ferrari audio upgrade, we chose a Hertz HCP1D amplifier, which sends plenty of clean power to the subs, resulting in great impact and authority from the bass. Both of the amplifiers were completely hidden under the front bonnet.
Front and Rear Radar/Laser Increases Driving Safety
Now who would own a Ferrari and drive it “gently?” I think you get the point. For this vehicle, we installed an Escort 9500CI custom radar detector and laser defuser system. A front mounted radar receiver was completely hidden from view behind the front bumper so as to truly have a stealth look, while keeping all of its performance. Front and rear laser defusers were installed and if you look closely at the pictures you can see the custom mount for the rear defusers. In the rear of this Ferarri, there is not a lip above the rear tag where laser defusers can commonly be installed. We custom fabricated a beautiful mount to hold them in a perfect alignment for optimum performance. The inside of the Scuderia did not have a factory spot to house the display and controller for the 9500ci, so we modified the small overhead console to mount them. If you look closely at the pictures, you can see it looks like Ferarri installed them at the factory.
Accent Lighting Sets The Interior Apart
For the finishing touch, we installed blue accent lighting in several spots throughout the vehicle. It was just one more piece in the puzzle to separate this Ferrari from the rest of them.
