Kingpin Car & Marine Audio loves doing custom-installed laser and radar detector systems. We love the technology, and the safety net these systems provide. We also love the way every vehicle presents its own set of challenges for integrating a system into the vehicle and making it look factory-installed. Installs like this are what get our blood pumping, so when the opportunity arose for us to do an install in a 2015 Mercedes CLA250, we jumped at the chance.
Top-Of-The-Line K40 System For Complete Protection
For this vehicle, we chose the K40 RL360i system with front and rear radar receivers, along with front and rear laser defusers. It is our top-of-the- line system and is state of the art when it comes to protection from speeding tickets.
Custom-Installed Laser and Radar Detector: No Compromises, The Kingpin Standard
It is the opinion of Kingpin that most of the custom-installed laser and radar detector system installs are rushed to hit a magical price point. Shops are afraid to charge the labor that is really needed to extract the best performance from these systems and ensure years of reliable use. You can rest assured that a system bought from us will never see compromises that may detract from performance or reliability. We think that, if you make a significant investment in your vehicle, you should get all the performance you pay for.
Custom Fabricated Front Mount
In this Mercedes, we knew the front sensors had to be on a solid mount, so we fabricated a custom aluminum mount to hold the radar receiver and dual G5 laser defusers behind the lower front bumper. This mount allowed us to have a solid mount that would not vibrate as the car drives up the road. We have seen, all to often, sensors having been mounted to flimsy front bumpers, knowing quite well that this approach would affect performance when the car is moving. By using a custom mount, we were also able to ensure the sensors were perfectly aimed straight ahead, and would not be blocked by any obstruction.
Rear Protection From Radar And Laser
In the rear of the vehicle, we hid the rear radar receiver behind the rear bumper, also on a solid mount, giving it similar performance to the front receiver. We mounted the rear laser defuser at the bottom of the license plate in a classy tag-frame mount.
Laser Defusers Protect You From Lasers
We would like to point out that the K40 system uses laser defusers, not sensors. When it comes to laser, receivers are useless. You see, a detector can’t pick up laser being shot at someone in front of you the way it can with radar. All a laser receiver is good for is alerting you to the fact that you are about to get a ticket. Laser defusers take protection to a whole new level. When the K40 defusers sense laser being shot at them, they immediately fire back powerful infrared beams of light at a pulse rate the gun can’t understand, so it doesn’t get a reading. You now have time to slow down and avoid a ticket.
Inside the vehicle, we used a Mid-City Engineering interface that integrates the K40 unit with the Mercedes computer. When the system senses a threat, it will show up in the driver information center between the gauges. It tells you if it is laser or radar, and whether the threat is in front of you or behind you.
Stealth Warning Light Installation
We also disassembled the instrument cluster and installed warning lights inside the turn signal indicators. Under normal circumstances, the turn signals illuminate in their normal green. When a threat occurs in front of the driver, the left blinker will flash blue. In a rear threat, the right blinker will flash blue. This is another way we offer our clients a factory-style integration of modern electronics.
Control Unit Mount Promotes Easy Servicability
We mounted the main control unit on a custom polymer mount, bolted into the passenger kick panel. This keeps the wiring away from under the dash area, so an automotive technician can easily service your vehicle.
Final Check To Ensure Functionality
When we finish installing a system, we run a whole series of diagnostic and performance tests on the system to make sure it is performing well. This is one more way that we go above and beyond to ensure the ultimate in performance and reliability.
