We admit it. We love BMW’s. We love the way they perform, the way they look, and the build quality. What we don’t love is the sound quality typical of the factory BMW audio system. Fortunately, we understand how the BMW engineers designed the audio systems in these vehicles, and we know how to improve them. So follow along on the build of this 2010 BMW 5 Series as Kingpin Car and Marine Audio supercharges the sound quality while keeping the interior looking like BMW delivered the car this way.
BMW Audio System Upgrade Starts With A Great Source
This BMW audio system starts with the factory radio in the dash. We kept the factory audio system in the dash and used it as the basis for our upgrade. The musical signal from the stock stereo is sent to an Audison BitOne.1 processer. The first purpose of the BitOne.1 in this build is de-equalize the musical signal. In simple terms this means we can strip the music of any equalization that BMW adds to the music so we can get back to the original, unmodified music.
The Bit One.1 also allows us to wire the system actively, using dedicated amplifier channels for every speaker that we will install in this vehicle. This means that every speaker has its own dedicated 31 band equalizer so we can fine tune the output precisely, and each speaker can be digitally delayed, so it arrives at the perfect time. The results are simply astounding. When properly installed and tuned, the music is placed across the top of the dash and the musicians stage in front of you like you are at a live performance, front row, and center stage.
The BitOne.1 processor also allows us to have a secondary input, and in this case we installed a Pure i20 to the digital input. This gives the client the ability to take high-resolution music files from his Smartphone and play them directly into the BitOne.1 processor. These music files take the sound quality to the next level as the resolution and detail in the music goes way beyond what is available from an MP3 or AAC file commonly stored on a SmartPhone. The music will also stay in it’s digital format until it leaves the amplifier and goes out to the speaker. In many modern car audio systems the music can go from digital to analog and back to digital multiple times before reaching the speakers. Each time the music is transformed, you lose something. By eliminating all of this, we keep the integrity of the music intact.
Upgrade Continues With Great Sounding Speakers And Customized Door Panels
In the front doors, we rebuilt the bottom of the door panel to hold a 6” woofer so the car would have much more up-front bass impact. We were careful in the door redesign to give it a factory look. Custom door panels are one of our specialties here at Kingpin Car and Marine Audio. We have found that by rebuilding the lower part of the door we can dramatically improve the clarity and output potential of the stereo system. What we feel makes us unique is that we can keep the modification to the door panel looking completely stock. The client gets a dramatic improvement in their stereo system and keeps the stock beauty of the door panel completely intact.
We chose Audison AVK6 speakers up front for this BMW as they have incredible detail that marries well with the high-resolution music getting played in the vehicle. They include a 6” woofer, and 1.1” tweeter that we installed in the factory location in the sail panels at the top of the door. In the rear, deck we installed Audison AVX5 speakers, which are a coaxial design with the tweeter mounted directly above the 5” midrange. These were installed in the factory locations.
Clean Clear Sound With Solid Hard Hitting Bass
In the trunk area, we built a custom subwoofer enclosure to hold two Audison AV12 subwoofers that serve as the low end foundation for this BMW audio system. The enclosure was a sealed box design and the woofers fired towards the front of the vehicle. This design allowed us to keep as much trunk space as possible for the client. If you look at the pictures of the trunk, you will see two strategically placed grilles which hide the two Audison amplifiers. We used an AV5.1K and an AV Quattro for this build. We chose these amplifiers for their incredible output along with their stunning clarity. Each of the eight speakers in the vehicle gets their own dedicated amplifier channel, which allows us to maximize the control afforded to us by the Bit One.1 processor mentioned earlier.
Throughout the build process we chose materials that matched the factory materials in color, grain, and finish. It is the small things like this that we feel set our installations apart from other retailers.
Great Sound Results In Very Happy Clients!
When the clients picked up the vehicle they were incredibly happy. Their BMW audio system was now all that they bargained for and more. They now had a stereo system where getting stuck in traffic becomes a joy rather than a distraction. If you own a BMW and are unhappy with the sound quality and the output, we invite you to contact us here at Kingpin Car and Marine Audio.
