A client from Wilsonville contacted Kingpin Car and Marine Audio for a Bennington Pontoon boat audio system upgrade. We scheduled a one-on-one consultation with the client to discuss where and how he used the boat and his goals for the sound system. Once we had a firm understanding of his expectations, we laid out a solution to meet his expectations.
Marine Speaker Upgrade
We chose the new Hertz HMX 6.5 LD coaxial marine speakers for this build. A total of four pairs would provide even distribution of sound throughout the boat. The LD series of speakers include integrated RGB LED illumination.
For those times when people are swimming or being towed behind the boat, we installed a set of Exile Audio SXT9Q speaker enclosures on custom-made brackets. The brackets are secured to the boat with quick-release pins and electrical disconnects to make removing them easy.
We fabricated a custom subwoofer enclosure out of polymer plastic to house a pair of Hertz HX300 12-inch subwoofers. We located the subwoofer enclosure under one of the bench seats. Our team created a new trim panel that matches the contour of the factory trim panels under the front bench seats.
Bennington Pontoon Boat Audio System Electronics
Because the client explained that he would be using his smartphone to stream audio over a Bluetooth connection, we installed an Exile Audio EXMC1 Bluetooth Digital Media Center on a panel that replaces the factory radio in the dash. We added an 1/8-inch aux input and subwoofer level control.
Three Exile Audio amplifiers power the system. An XM15.4 four-channel amp provides 225 watts per channel to the Hertz marine speakers. An XM30.2 provides the Exile rear speakers with up to 300 watts each. Finally, a monster XM20.1 subwoofer amplifier powers the subwoofers with up to 1.000 watts per driver. We created a polymer plastic amp rack with a custom grille to conceal and protect the amps.
Our team fabricated a set of beltline trim pieces with integrated LED lighting to complement the illuminated speakers. We used Heise LED strips and one of their controllers to make the system easy to use. We also installed a set of Perko transom lights to make it safer to swim after dusk.
Another Happy Client
The client returned to Kingpin Car and Marine Audio, anxious to hear his Bennington Pontoon boat audio system. He could not believe how clear and detailed it was, and how loud it played without any distortion.
