A client from Beaverton contacted Kingpin Car & Marine Audio about upgrading his 2016 Mercedes C400 audio system. Our team scheduled a time for him to stop by the shop with his vehicle so we could look it over, as well as get to know him better. When he arrived, we sat in the vehicle and listened to the stereo system. What the client wanted was better clarity, along with a serious improvement in low-end bass. Since we know European vehicles so well, we knew the recipe for success in this vehicle right away. We worked up a proposal that the client approved, so we set a time for him to drop off the vehicle.
Amplification and Integrated Processing
In this build, we left the factory stereo system in the dash intact, as well as the three-way front speakers and the factory rear speakers. Our team integrated an Audison AP8.9Bit amplifier with the stock stereo system, accomplishing several goals along the way. Integrated into the Audison amplifier is a nine-channel processor, giving us incredible control over the final sound in the vehicle, including the ability to remove the equalization curve added to the music by the Mercedes engineers. It comes with an eight-channel amplifier, and we used six channels to power the front speakers in an active configuration and the remaining two channels to power the rear speakers. Each of these speakers receives digital delay so the sound arrives at the driver’s ear at the precise time, making the sound stage across the front of the dash, just like in an intimate jazz club. It removes all of the driver’s door bias and overbearing center channel sound that you normally hear from stock stereo systems.
We also tuned the nine-band parametric equalizer, crossover points and output levels for each of the speakers. The results were extraordinary.
When it came time for bass, we knew the client wanted something that would hit him in the chest whenever he desired, so we chose three Hertz Mille ML2000 8” subwoofers. These little guys have incredible sound quality with output that goes beyond most 10” drivers.
Top Choice Power Sourcing
For power, we chose an Exile XM20.1 amplifier, which supplies more than 2,500 watts of power. The Audison amplifier has a ninth channel output that can control a sub amp, so the woofers got the same fine-tuning treatment as the interior speakers.
Custom Fabricated Trunk
To set off the trunk, we used our Kingpin 2015 Limited Edition trunk panel, which really made everything come together. When you couple the LED backlighting with the custom pressed grilles, it makes the trunk look like Mercedes delivered the vehicle that way. In typical Kingpin fashion, we designed the trunk to be easily disassembled for any service work on the vehicle or stereo system.
Tuning Into Clarity
Once they finished the installation, our installers got out their laptop and began the task of fine-tuning the Audison Bit processor built into the AP8.9Bit amp. It is our opinion that a client should get all the performance owed them, so we never short-change the tuning process. We look for every last ounce of sound quality in the system.
Client Loves Mercedes C400 Audio Upgrades!
At this point, we contacted the client and told him his vehicle was ready to be picked up. When he arrived, we popped the trunk and watched as his face broke out into a sweeping grin, so we knew he liked the install. The proof is in the sound quality, though. When we cranked it up the first time, he was floored by how much better it sounded. And did he ever love the bass! That made our day.
