A client from Tualatin, Oregon, that owns a 2012 Audi R8 convertible contacted Kingpin Car and Marine Audio about making some audio upgrades to his vehicle. He had seen some of the work we had done on other Audi R8 audio projects- he knew the way we design and install systems matched his tastes exactly. The client also inquired about having a radar detector and laser diffuser system installed. We scheduled a consultation with the client. We showed him how and where we could install the equipment he wanted. He liked the plan, so we put a quote together for him. With his approval, we set off to work.
Radar Detector and Laser Diffuser
The client chose the Escort 9500ci and Laser ShifterPro package for his Audi. We install a lot of these systems, and we have a lot of faith in their operation and reliability. For the laser shifters, we mounted a pair in the front grill, just underneath the main support beam. Each shifter was mounted on either side of the grill to provide maximum coverage. For the rear, we mounted a pair of sensors on each side of the license plate just under the engine cover lid. As always, we secure our wiring with tesa automotive-grade cloth tape to protect and conceal it. We installed the radar detector modules behind the front and rear bumpers to keep them completely concealed.
The client asked that we install the display for the 9500ci at the top of the instrument cluster. This location keeps it out of the way, but easily visible in the event of a warning.
Audi R8 Audio Package
The client chose our Signature audio package for his R8. The Signature package features a combination of components that we have used in many other R8s. We know it sounds great and is very reliable. We started by removing the small factory subwoofer from under the dash. We constructed a compact fiberglass enclosure that houses a single Hertz Mille ML2000.3 8-inch subwoofer. We wrapped the enclosure in durable gray carpet and mounted it with heavy-duty aluminum brackets.
For speakers, we mounted a set of Hertz ML700.3 3-inch speakers in the factory door locations and a set of ML280.3 in the pillars. To accompany the 8-inch sub, we installed Hertz ML1800.3 7-inch woofers in the bottom of the doors. These large midbass drivers help reinforce low-frequency output and aid in stereo separation. Listening to the drum intro on Dire Strait’s Money for Nothing is awe-inspiring through these speakers.
Amplifier and Processor Mounting
We used two amplifiers to power the Audi R8 audio system. An Audison Voce AV5.1k powers the subwoofer, the midrange drivers and the tweeters. To power the midbass drivers, we chose a Voce AV Due two-channel amp. The AV 5.1k produces up to 75 watts for the tweeters, 150 watts for the mids and 600 watts for the sub. The AV Due produces an impressive 260 watts for each of the midbass drivers.
We mounted the amplifiers and an Audison bit One DSP processor on a metal amp rack. It fits nicely in the bottom of the front storage compartment. We created a carpeted cover that matches the gray trim and includes a perforated aluminum grill to allow heat to escape from the amplifiers.
System Configuration and Tuning
With all of the equipment installed, we moved to the configuration and tuning phase of the Audi R8 Audio project. We use a combination of our Audison bit Tune and an oscilloscope to setup the system. The bit Tune measures frequency response, phase and arrival time from each speaker. It helps to provide a base setting we can use for tweaking the bit One processor. We use the scope to ensure that none of the amplifiers will clip when the volume is cranked. The result is a system that sounds stunning and plays nice and loud.
After about seven days of work, the client returned to Kingpin Car and Marine Audio to pick up his car. He was blown away with how great the system sounded and loved how we integrated the Escort radar detector and laser diffuser systems into the vehicle. If you have an Audi R8, or any other exotic, then call to schedule a consultation. We would be happy to help make your dreams a reality.
