A client from Oregon City, Oregon came to Kingpin Car & Marine Audio looking to dramatically upgrade the sound system in their 2006 Chrysler 300c. The vehicle was well equipped from the factory with the Hemi engine, leather seating, navigation radio, and their premium sound package. The funny thing is that “premium” is the last word you would think of after listening to the stock stereo system. After meeting with the client, we decided to leave the factory navigation system intact and do a complete audio overhaul using new speakers, amplifiers, and a processor. The client wanted the system to sound great, but more than anything else, they wanted it to jam. They wanted concert level sound for extended periods of time. We always love a challenge, so we designed a system that we thought would meet their needs. The client liked it, and an installation time was set.
Start With Sound Proofing To Keep The Sound In And The Rattles Out
Right from the start we knew this vehicle needed to jam, so we did a complete sound proofing package on the entire vehicle. This does two things for the client. First, it quiets the car down so he will hear more of his music and less road noise when driving down the road. Second, it eliminates rattles and buzzing that would surely happen from the increased sound pressure levels.
Top Of The Line Mille Speakers Anchor The Sound Up Front
In the front of the vehicle we replaced the six factory speakers with the Mille Legend 3-way package from Hertz. We used the ML1600 woofers, the ML700 midranges, and ML280 tweeters in the stock locations. The Hertz Mille Legend product is unique in that it can extract every last nuance in the music, while, at the same time, playing very loud without any hint of straining or compression in the music.
SIX Hertz Subwoofers Rock The Trunk
In the trunk of the vehicle we built a custom enclosure to hold 6 Hertz DS250 10” subwoofers, with three of them on each side of the trunk firing at each other. This configuration allowed the client to keep some of his trunk space while giving him incredible bass impact. In the floor of the vehicle we flush mounted the four amplifiers. Two Audison SR1DK amplifiers provide over 2000 watts of real power to the subwoofers. We also used two Audison SR4 amplifiers for the front speakers giving the client over 500 watts of clean power. One is bridged, powering the ML1600 woofers and the second one is powering the ML700 midranges and the ML280 tweeters. Using the amplifiers in this configuration allowed us to use dedicated amplifier channels for each of the speakers, which results in much better control and accuracy.
BitOne Processor Is The Natural Choice For Top Level Tuning Capability
We had eight dedicated amplifier channels in this audio system so we needed a powerful processor to control everything. We again went to Audison for the solution. We chose the BitOne Processor, since it has eight channels of output, making it perfect for this system. The controller for the processor was flushed into the dash right below the navigation unit in a custom carbon fiber trim plate which we produced in-house.
The BitOne can do some pretty cool magic with the audio signal when set up by the right person. In this vehicle, the factory Chrysler amplifier adds an equalization curve to the musical signal that would seriously degrade the sound quality if we left it there. The processor can de-equalize, or strip the music of this equalization so we can get back to the original, clean signal. The factory amplifier also takes the music and divides it up into different frequencies of sound. We did not want to use their chosen frequencies, as again, it would have hurt our sound quality. The BitOne put all the music back together, so we have a good starting point from which to work.
Now that we have a good musical source, we divided the music up into dedicated channels for the subwoofers, woofers, midranges, and tweeters. Eight channels in all. Each speaker was now reproducing the music that best suit their capabilities.
We then used sophisticated devices like real-time analyzers and oscilloscopes to tune the system output levels and individual equalizers to maximize the sound quality. Every speaker also had their own unique digital delay added to them, so all of the sound arrives at the ears of the listener at the perfect moment. Musical instruments are now spread across the top of the dash like you are sitting front and center at a concert. The vocals are positioned right where the studio engineer placed them when mixing the recording.
Great Looking Trunk With Easy Access
One of the coolest things that we accomplished in the installation was the accessibility of everything in the trunk. The whole trunk can be disassembled in under fifteen minutes in the event the vehicle needs servicing.
Words can’t properly express the delight of the client the first time they cranked it up. They were smiling like a kid on their birthday. Everything in the music came through crystal clear. And the volume, WOW! This thing jammed. Never again would the client complain that their stereo didn’t have enough output. Listening to this 300c brought back memories of favorite concerts from days past.
